Mouse ears

Postby A6y_N0rma1 » Wed May 06, 2020 3:42 pm

For long prints in ABS and other plastics that suffer from bed release due to contraction when cooling, one solution that has been talked about is the use of "mouse ears" or small round sections of raft that the user can strategically place in selected areas. The user selects the diameter of the mouse ears, the number of layers thick, and their location. The video showed how to do this in Simplify3D but I'm not sure if this feature is yet available in Ideamaker. I've tried to do some searching, but there doesn't seem to be a way in IM to do the same thing. Anyone know if (or how) to do this?

Doesn't exist in ideamaker, just use Brim.

The only real difference anyway is mouse ears are brim, but limited brim only as small circles of flat layers to increase surface area that you either manually placed or maybe some slicers auto placed. Brim is the same thing, same concept, just a complete perimiter flat layer or layers like the brim of a hat around the object. The only time Brim would be an issue is some massive print that maxed out the print area- no room for brim.

Jetguy, as always, you are correct on what mouse ears are and that they are just a special form of brim. However, they are very useful on thin tall prints printed in large numbers where removing the brim would be too time consuming vs a few mouse ears. The example is the Prusa face mask head bands. Only a few are needed to keep the print from curling and lifting and the time spent in removing a full brim from the entire print, especially in tight areas, for 100's of prints is not an easy task. I found a potential solution (not done in the slices) of adding disks (designed in another file) and merging them with the print. While not ideal, it works. Would be much better if it could be done easily in IM. Thanks for the feedback.

The option could be called Adaptive brim. So the slicer could auto generate this, or you could set manual just like the support.

so have a % for how much Brim for corners and small parts. If size = 2mm or less then add mouse ear at end of model.
