E2 Motion controller firmware says install failed

Postby Blue21 » Tue Jul 21, 2020 9:22 pm

I used online update for the Motion Controller Board Firmware to version 0.2.506 (2020-05-18 03:10:26). Didn't remember issue during installation and the printer is operating correctly since that update.
Recently I noticed that it indicate on the LCD panel that the Install had failed.

When I redo the process, either using "online" or downloaded firmware on the usb stick, I get same result:
"Invalid firmware" error -2000

So should I be alarmed ?
Why is it happening ? I was hopping getting a fresh download on the usb stick will solve that but no.
What is error -2000 ?

Did you remember how you were restarting the printer when updating?
Also, would you like to export the serial log and share with us?

I was also getting the same error report of invalid firmware.
Reflashed the firmware and it shows up to date now on the settings screen.

Not really but usually with any firmware update I wait at least an hour before doing anything on my own, I always expect that the machine will do a restart on its own in case it is needed or will give a message to user in case it has to power cycle the machine.
For sure I have not power cycled the machine after 1 minutes, I know that it can brick a device.

Is there a way to downgrade - upgrade that firmware or to reflash the current version?

I downloaded the update onto the USB stick and followed the instructions here although it shows a Pro version....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk5UygGm2XU

The main settings screen now shows the update is installed, however on the screen that's shown in your pic that the online update failed mine is the same, but under local update it now shows as installed.

There are update instructions through USB stick for the E2 here: https://support.raise3d.com/E2/how-to-u ... -1143.html, the link indicated for download is to raise3d.cn, last time I used it. This time downloaded from raise3d.com but files looks the same. These instructions are similar to the youtube video you indicated. The difference is that for the E2, there is a restart of the printer requested on the screen that is not shown on the video. The time stamp of the pictures are out of sequence, I started to take pictures only after I realize something goes wrong and I have redone the the update to take picture of normal operation.

I had this strange screen in between, sounds like the raisetouch firmware but this one was update, even online check confirmed it. This happended only one time at first update using USB stick:

Same problem using an update through the USB stick, I can install that firmware E2-0.2.506.firm, it process it, ask for restart.
At the end when I check for online update, it shows me that the firmware installation failed and the an online update result in a firmware invalid as in my original post.

Sorry for the poor pictures quality, need to found another solution than the mobile phone.

I'm a total newbie, but on the screen where you could choose online or local update I chose local update and it shows the latest version installed. On my online update I get the same as you do, i.e that the update failed.

I'm assuming that because it shows the latest firmware number on the main screen it is actually working on that update and local update means it got it from the USB stick.

Me too, new to Raise3D and the E2. Now on mine I see also no error message for the local update, only for the online update. Maybe it is just no possible to do it online for the motor control board, only for the panel board. In any case they don't have the same way to install locally, motor is through browsing the usb stick content and selecting the .firm file and panel is updated through the local update menu entry.

Maybe Vicky can clarify us if the motor board firmware can be online updated or it has to be done locally only ?

Also I would like to know from the last serial log I posted if the error seen at restart is gone and if not what to do ?

Thanks in advance

Would you like to help confirm how did you restart your printer?
If it was restarted with the button, it probably wouldn't help the situation. Please try physiaclly power the machine off then power it back on. If that still doesn't work, you may need create a support ticket to talk directly with our technicains for more advanced help. There's probably something wrong on your board needs to reflash.

I can confirm you that it was restarted by power cycling the printer. By me the front button is set to turn on-off the lights, not to restart the printer.

1) Can the motor board firmware be online updated or it has to be done locally only ?
2) Earlier you indicate that there was an error during restart, can you confirm if in last serial log it is still there ?

It can only be done locally.
Yes, there is still an error. Please creat a support ticket and attach the communications here to the ticket for further assistance from our technicians. They may need to dig deeper to figure out what's going on for your printer.

Did you ever get a resolution? I have just taken delivery of my second E2 today. the first one updated to 0.2.506 from USB on first reboot. This one just refuses to update the firmware. Same USB stick as the original machine. Same firmware version file. With the USB stick inserted containing the latest file it reboots twice but then shows the same 0.1.1029 firmware version.

Thanks

By me the update went finally ok, correct version is displayed, remains just an error message during the boot process, but maybe not related. What I noticed is that in one of the last attempts through USB, a message was more looking like it finished an update for the panel firmware. Don't know if it is linked at all.
My issue was more that the motor board firmware cannot be updated online even if it is proposed on the display, it has to go through the USB.

I didn’t read the whole thing, but when you upgrade the E2 printer firmware, be sure to turn off the machine at the back of the switch. Not on screen. I also got an error myself when I tried to restart printer from the screen.

Hi Vicky, thanks for the advise, but after doing all the work to make a new ticket by raise3d.com and creating/uploading fresh serial log, I got a no go answer that I should contact my reseller (which will be of no direct help apart forwarding my request to your support department and forwarding me their answer). They said that it was for my "user experience" in local language but I leave in a country with 4 official languages (Switzerland) where my reseller is not speaking my mother language, we had to exchange in English :). I didn't get an answer since some days from the ticket system if the language was just to be kind to me or if it was a mandatory raise3d.com (US company) requirement that anyone not in US or China are second level customer.

Sounds I have no choice other than contacting my reseller, not really to have to follow such slow and inefficient path. In any case, thanks for your support, Vicky, it was always nice to have somebody that answer in a more than reasonable time, having look at forum before purchase, good and supporting activity in this forum was a key to decide to swap from Ultimaker to Raise3D, thanks again.
