Are my extruder cooling fans supposed to run?

Postby Deanethingi22 » Fri Feb 25, 2022 8:57 am

Hi Guys,
I have noticed that my extruder fans are not running.
Neither left or right turn on at any time while I am printing ( I am using PETG at 235C).
Are they supposed to run no matter which extruder you are using? I am currently using Right extruder only.
Are they supposed to run only at certain times?
How do I test run them, as I cant find the control for them.
Thanks in advance.
Deane

The 2 side fans for the printer should only be on when the Gcode tells them to turn on and the setting to control them can be found in the cooling tab of your template. To check for functionality you can click the tune menu on the touch screen and then set the fan speed to 100 and this will turn on the 2 side fans.

Question: when the GCode tells that the fans need to turn, what is the issue that one isn't turning? I replaced the fan with a new one and this is not working. I tested the replaced fan and the new one and those works well. So, one side is working and other not. I replaced the extruder card and still one is not working. What is the issue?

It is possible that the Extruder connection cable which connects the print head to the motion controller board may be damaged and is only supplying power to the Always on ports and not the PWM ones. Can you send a picture of the Extruder connection board on the side of the print head as it is currently configured so I can see what it's current state is?

This is the image where you can see that the connection is well on the correspondent places plugged in.

Thank you for the update. it sounds like the issue here may be the Extruder connection board is not sending the power from the Extruder connection Cable to the fan as you stated the fan was replaced with the issue still existing.

I also replaced the board with a new one and this didn't changed the issue. So if it is not the fan, not the board, it must be the power to the board from the main board that makes the issue.
What can I verify to know what I have to look for?

If the issue is power to the extruder connection board then you are looking at an issue with either the Extruder connection cable (multi colored cable) as this is what carries the 12v power for the fans, but with the other fans being able to spin this is very strange and I would try swapping the fan connections and see if the error still occurs. If it is not the cable then the only component left would be the Motion controller board, but it is unlikely to be this as there are no other issues being seen.

I had an option from a dealer of Raise3D, that told me that it might be the general cable which could have a problem.
But I have a solution, still not knowing if this can be done. As the 2 fans work simultaneous at the same speed, I could connect them in parallel on the same connection. Can this be done and will this not generate any other problem.

Unfortunaly I cannot reccomend this option as it would require modification of the cables and the only way you could run both off the same power would be to plug both side fans into the 2 unused ports on the right side of the board as this provides a constant power to the fans.

So what is the problem? Or where is the problem?

I have an error 3012, message Board Error, the printer stops suddenly in the middle of the print area and does nothing than standing still.
in attachment some pictures and the log of the error.

Is this issue in relation to the fan issue?
