Magnetic holder for extruder fans

Postby Markus64 » Wed Jun 03, 2020 8:57 pm

Hi Guys,
so far it always annoyed me that when working on the hotend, the fans had to be screwed on and off every time. I use the fan mod from ocelot27, but also here the fan has to be dismantled every time to get to the hotends. For this reason, I have redesigned the fan mounts and provided them with neodymium magnets. The fan with holder is secured against twisting by a guide and then holds absolutely firmly by magnetic force.
To work on the hot end, the entire fan is now simply removed - without the hassle of screwing. If you are interested, I will make the STL's available for download.

Markus, I'm gonna need you to take a break from all this awesome stuff your building for the Pro2. this is next after your water cooling mix.

Cooling of stepper motors is more interesting. What coolers do you use and what kind of cooling heatsinks?

Hi All, Is PETG heat resistant enough for this? I've been running the ocelot fan mod for a year or so, and made it out of alloy910 because i was worried about heat, but it looks like petg was used here. I'd just like to not dry my alloy 910 today, when i have a good roll of polymax petg ready to go. Thanks!

PET-G is working fine here ;)

Good day. Markus64, can you find out what kind of fan you are using? Its number or link where you bought it.

to make the access to the hotends as easy as possible i chose a design which transfers the current through the magnets, so i can take the fans off completely. I used the original fan for this, as it is better than its reputation. Actually i couldn't find any better fan in this dimension. There are fans with much higher throughput, but, the specified throughput doesn't say anything about the performance in certain positions, as soon as there is resistance, i.e. by the fan's fannel like housing, the throughput drops dramatically as the fans wattage matters...this 35x35x10 fan delivers 1.7W, which is strong...and i decided to go with them. Neodym has 10x1.5mm. Cable can be soldered easily, the magnet performance is not affected by this. The unit is kept in position by locator pins, the magnets only keep the things together. STL's can be delivered once i finished both sides.

@Kurtyard,
you did a great job!!! I am looking forward to the files being available for download. This solution is of course totally ingenious. You did a lot of work and achieved a great result. :D

finished both extruder fans. I used brass threads for melting in like https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07CPR ... UTF8&psc=1
M3x4x5
I added aluminium shields 0.5mm to protect the fan housing (i adjusted the fan output nozzle somewhat closer to the hotend)
The shield is glued with heat resistant silicone (i.e. Dirko HT or Hylomar)
The angle and distance can be finetuned with M3 washers, but this has to be done once on the initial installation.
The 10x1.5 neodyms are glued in, it's important to do this careful to get the 2 magnet pairs parallel. Helpful to put the magnets on a even metal surface while glueing.
i used 0.6 nozzle and 200u layer - you can get better parts using hq settings for these small pieces :mrgreen:
