For slower machines the 3d preview can be a drag. My iMac from 2009 is fine for modelling in Fusion 360 and visualising/slicing 3d models in Ideamaker, but when it comes to the Ideamaker 3d preview it grinds to a halt on larger models. It's just not up to the job of representing every line of gcode as a cylinder.
Cura downgrades its previewer automatically because it detect the poor graphics driver and it shows me traces as a 3d model. Ideamaker has the customisable preference to display traces instead of emulating line width in the 2d preview and it's super-slick, but it only shows one layer at a time. I think the option to do the same for the 3d preview could answer this problem.
