Is the TMC2208 a direct replacement for the older stepper drivers? I figured I might as well upgrade the drivers while I'm at it.

Have you serviced the hotend assembly lately? Make sure the nozzle hasn't backed itself out and the cold end hasn't slipped down from the main assembly. That's just generic Chinese made filaments. There are 2-3 of factories that make the bulk of these and their packaging are pretty the same. There might be a white sticker on the inside of the spool that might give you more information.

They should cost much less than that. Check aliexpress or similar websites.
