Sporadic Extruder Retraction/Flutter

Postby earthwormgears » Wed Aug 22, 2018 8:19 pm

Friends,

I searched the forum for this issue and could not find anything related. Also, I am not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, so here it is in general...

I have a Pro2 (12x12x12 inch) and have owned and successfully been printing ABS parts for a month or more. I use ideaMaker for all my slicing.

I have recently been needing to print some parts with an alternate filament, so I decided to use the right extruder instead of unloading and reloading the left extruder.

As some of you might know, the Pro2 has an auto retract/extend for alternating extruders. For a reason I cannot put my finger on, when printing a part solely on the right extruder, I get a random burst of extruder flutter. The extruders will alternate as if the gcode is telling it to print using the left extruder then the right and so on. It happens very rapidly. It will burst a random number of flutters then land on the right extruder. It will print a bit then do it again. There is no rhyme or reason on interval or layer occurrence.

Any guesses? This has me puzzled!

Thanks in advance!

May I have your gcode and data files to have a look?

Hi Vicky,

I have attached the gcode and ideamaker file.

I'll note that the flutter occurs much less with this part. I can provide the same files for another part if you like. I have tried only two parts since this started happening. Both are parts that printed clean on the left extruder.

Thank you!

Have you found a solution to this? We've also had this issue, though we believe it has something to do with the wire as its happened to us even while the printer isn't printing. Thanks.

Does the issue also happen when you try to load filament on different nozzles?

Yes, but not always while we're loading the filament if that's what you mean. Usually if it happens that early in a print then it had already been fluttering in the previous failed print.

Would you like to help do another test for me?
Press the Disable Motor Icon (the motor icon with cross). And move the extruder around. And whether the nozzles will flutter or not?
It now sounds like a loose wiring issue or defective servo or cable issue.

Thank you for the help, but as of today we're getting the printer replaced under warranty with the support ticket I'd opened up for this.

They did, however, have me run that test before and the nozzle wouldn't flutter at specific locations as I moved the head around. We think there was a problem with the wires or connections at some point before the cable going from the top of the print head to the servo because the blue light at the top of the print head would also flicker with the fluttering nozzle.
