So clearly, understanding how slicing works is important. When Ideamaker or whatever slicer you use makes the gcode file for the printer, it takes and reads the STL file you imported and slices it at the layer high you set in settings much like taking a large Ham and putting it on an automatic meat slicer. Each layer is then just an outline in the shape of the STL file. The slicing software you gave it a nozzle size and just like a magic marker or wide pen, it draws INSIDE the outlines of that layer to make the individual gcode moves. The point here is, the width of the nozzle determines how far inside the outside line and also how close adjacent stripes will be. It also is calulating a volume of plastic for each line and take the filament diameter input as a setting and determines the length of filament the extruder should push into the nozzle for that same XY line of motion.
If you input the wrong sized nozzle compared to your physical nozzle, the resulting line will not be the right shape and distance from other adjacent lines.
For example, telling the slicer you have a 0.4mm nozzle, and you really have a 0.8, 2 things happen. #1 the gcode will only command the volume and rate of plastic for the 0.4mm nozzle, so you get the effect that the hot noodle of filament coming out is not as great of pressure, and is stretched as a thin stringy line out of the big fat 0.8mm nozzle as it moves along in XY. The second major effect is again, the lines will be next to each other the proper distance of a 0.4mm nozzle, but that means the wider 0.8mm nozzle is going to overlap the previous line on adjacent infill.
Far worse in a different way, telling the slicer you have a 0.8mm nozzle, when in fact, you only have a 0.4mm nozzle, the gcode will contain the extrusion volume for a 0.8mm nozzle width. So the extruder is going to jam more plastic through the nozzle and make it squirt and fill up around the tip as the nozzle drags forward. It leaves a giant plow dragging through a field trough. Worst case, your extruder skips steps steps because again, the poor motor is trying to jam way more plastic down the smaller nozzle, and flow plastic up and around the nozzle tip. This plowing action causes more drag and could also result in XY skips.
Right now, Ideamaker- the FREE software you get with the printer cannot support different nozzle sizes.
OTHER and some paid for software slicers like Simplify 3D DOES support different sized nozzles and tons of other process specific features not offered or functional in Free Ideamaker.
