Scorpion Full Size Mask Support Issues.

Postby Creative Grind » Thu Feb 09, 2017 1:07 am

Hello Raisers!

I'm having some issues with my print. This is a Scorpion Mask which I modeled in Maya and Zbruh over scan data of my head.

I'm printing this on two day old N2+. These legs on this design are giving me the bulk of the issues. I tried creating some supports for this on Idea Maker but they break off during printing. Which leaves the bottom of the legs hanging therefore I have issues in those areas. The auto supports that Idea Maker creates actually seem to hold up pretty well. The manual I placed are the ones s that break easily while printing.

Here's the manual supports settings I placed

Here's the print setting for my supports.

Print Results (I highlighted the supports that broke during printing)

My options now seem to be

1.separate the mask and print it into different pieces
2.play with the supports until they actually hold
3.maybe build small supports into the model (Not sure if this is ideal or how it would separate)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try changing your support infill type and printing again. Those line supports are easy to knock over.

you might also try turning on z-hop if the nozzles are hitting the supports during travel

Okay so what you guys have said has helped....Alot! The supports are holding strong.

But I have a new issue and not sure which way to go about it. So it seems like the supports are holding but the way they are attached to this one piece is very weak and it broke off. I paused the print and was thinking about super gluing the piece that broke off. Eventually the piece blends with the rest of the mask so I think a couple layers in it will be fine. Then thinking about touching up the piece after its done.

Any suggestions on this? You think supergluing a piece thats mid print is a good idea, just so the print can finish? What is the setting called that dictates the strength between the supports and actual print. That seems to be the problem.

Also my machine seems to shake a bit while printing. Not much, I would say normal but do notice it. Not sure if that is even an an issue as the print has gone flawlessly up until this point. My printer is currently sitting on hard wood floors. The wheels are locked. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I recommend dense layer whose density is much higher than normal support type.
Or you can decrease the vertical offset between model and support to be 0 so that there will have no gap between support and model. But with that value 0, support will be very hard to remove.
Or insulate your hotend to avoid heat radiation so that your model will have much more time for cooling and become solid. If you are using PLA, please make sure no top cover and fan bottom cover for better cooling.

Vicky,

I'm using PLA. The acrylic top is off.

Where is the "fan bottom cover" at and how do you remove it?

Thanks

Okay...Yea I never put it on. How many dense support layers would you recommend? At what infill ratio?

Okay, so supports are good but I have a new issue. This has now happened twice in the same exact spot. It appears at a certain height this support gets knocked over. The support itself is strong but it broke twice at the base of the raft? This is going on my 5th or 6th print of this mask. It did however clear this once layer once. Any suggestions?

you must insulate your hotends
