N2 glass build plate specs?

Postby Michael » Fri Jul 22, 2016 11:11 am

First successful large print 285mm X 285mm X 125mm... Yay.

However it was the crunching sound that gave me concern... Turned it over...

Are we sure this glass is tempered/thermal or is it just a cheap pane? Actually what are the specs on the glass plate?

So down while we determine something better than stock... Thinking aluminum or G10 with buildtak, anyone try those yet?

I did try searching the community... However search complains that glass build plate or even +glass +build +plate is too generic to search. Ugh

I'm not a glass breakage expert but that looks like an impact break and not a thermal break. I don't recall to many glass breaking stories here.

On many of my printers I use cheap pane glass and I have never had one break even after many cycles.

I had my plate break when it slid into one of the z bearings when removing a part.

Also have a custom geckotek plate on the way, and its made of metal. I will let you know how it is.

Our glass should be a tempered one.

Please advice how it broken after printing.

I was using a BuildTak spatula and started hearing the crunch of glass on the table under the glass.

Should be tempered? So what are the actual specs?

Well I'll order 2 more & 2 more buildtak sheets, however, I still don't like how thin this glass is for such a big surface area.

Think I'll also start looking at making an alternative... Reached out to Geckotek today as well.

Just started testing of a new direct replacement non glass/non metal build plat aka BTSN2 v2

Initial tests are going great. Heat transfer is much better than the glass, so heat up time is much less.

It's flatter than the OEM glass plate. So the new plate is +-0.02mm, and considering my Replicator2 MIC6 plates are +-0.005 inches. (0.127mm)

So yes, it's more than flat enough.

This flexible magnetic buildtak seem to be another good candidate for large print.

Not yet available though.

Getting ready to do a custom run of the our new drop in replacement of the N2 build plate. It's in use by several other N2, N2+ owners now, for beta testing now.

It's, lighter, transfers the build plate heat to the surface quicker, much safer, slightly flexible, flat ( ~0.02mm variation) and designed specifically for the N2. The plate can go directly from the N2, heated build plate or not, to an oven (110c) for annealing of parts to a freezer (0c). You can apply and remove the standard N2 sized BuildTak sheets, which you will need to supply, currently.

The previous runs had been CNC machine cut, however I wanted something smoother on the edges so that it could be safer for school use. So for this next beta run (hopefully final), we'll be using an Amada 2000W laser cutter, which we tested cutting the plates yesterday and it worked perfectly. If your interested PM me, we can ship it anywhere in the world.

Hope to have the prototype drop in replacement MIC6 plate today as well, and while it uses the stock N2 clips, it removes the issue of the clips being in the way on the extruder nozzles.

Thanks for the spec Vicky, however I am no longer using the glass build plates with my N2, just too dangerous.

Thanks Michael.P! We're loving the new plate. We uploaded the video and the current captured data on the thermal characteristics for comparison. Will continue to test in between projects.
