N2 Cover

Postby socke » Sun May 29, 2016 11:14 am

Yesterday, the cover of my N2 has fallen to the floor by accident and shattered.
I'm about to glue the pieces together, but from the first day, I wish it would be firmly mounted to the printer with hinges. Is there a chance that we see a change in design at this point?
I'm aware that there are also hinges for the N2 at thingiverse, but such basic features should be included from factory in my opinion. Also, I did afraid that drilling holes into the cover could have splintered it as well...

Sorry to hear that. I always wondered who among would the first to drop it. It wasn't an "if" but rather a "when". Before redesigning the printer, they really need to have small stock of those covers available at their distributors. Becuase the shipping cost of that cover must be quite expensive.

In an comment on thingiverse I've seen that I'm not the first. This doesn't help me directly, but I hope the design will be changed...

My printer is working again, so this is currently only a little blemish for me. Hopefully it will not happen once more, otherwise I afraid the damage could be irreparable.

I believe the least expensive replacement would be a local source, a sign shop maybe.

Is it possible to get a printer cover that is taller to prevent filament rubbing using http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1473365

While not nice-looking, what I did was wrap some gauze (first aid cloth) around the area of the tube where it would contact the acrylic cover. Something you may want to try. It looked less than stellar but was preferable to ruining the acrylic cover.

A happy surprise of upgrading to the Bondtech (Mini) extruder was that the lower profile made it so the tube no longer rubs and so I don't need the gauze anymore. Keep in mind I have a singe extruder N2, so this may or may not apply to your printer.

Tube rubbing will not do harm to printing. Don't need to be worry about it.

But it did harm the acrylic cover. It scratched mine and left permanent marks on it. That is why I used the gauze.

My tube filament guides are too long so it makes a loop. But isn't binding or scratching so I'm leaving them alone.

I have plans to build a spacer for the cover so that i can also run an exhaust. You could do it with some plywood/MDF boards, and print some brackets/supports. Add foam/weatherstripping for a good seal.

I designed a simple spacer with the idea of mounting hinges on the back and pneumatic springs to hold the lid up and allow it to soft-close. I haven't finished the hinge and lid support part but I'll upload the stl for the spacer soon. It offsets the protruding top edge to the inside of the top cover so that the cover can seal but also hinge back all the way.

Hi Michael, did you ever manage to complete the hinge/spacer arrangement design? It sounds good.. I took delivery of an N2 last week and having to lift off the cover constantly is already driving me nuts...

Any further information would be much appreciated..

Here's our solution -- add a 3D corner to hold the lid and 1/8in clear polycarbonate. Corner clips onto the lip at the top of the enclosure and holds the polycarbonate in slots (add a little glue). Polycarbonate cut to 20-1/4in x 4-3/16in and 18-15/16in x 4-3/16in, two of each. Attached the STL file if anyone has interest.

Hey Guys! Here a preview for you. I will be back with more explanations later.
This is a printable N2 and N2 plus Top cover, that I designed in december.
A friend of mine has a N2 and they broke the cover. so I decided to draw one.
The Cover is one Inch taller. Could be higher, if we would like to.
All parts are printable at least by the N2, with no support. The lexan sheets are
rectangle and holded between in the printed parts and secured by the set-screws.
If you prefer, you don't need to take off all the cover. Just open the lid, which is holding by himself
on hinges. I printed some test parts for now. My friend is supposed to print every parts and see how it is going,
when they will have time. On my N2 Plus, mine is not broken yet, but as you know, it is possible.

Tell me what you think, please.

Looks sharp! Considering the size of the machines, however, opening to the rear might not be the best arrangement. My printers sit high enough that I'd probably change to hinges on the left side so the door isn't out of reach when open.

Thank you for your comments zemlin. I appreciate. We will print one and see how much it does weight. Because if we need to completely take it off, instead only opening the lid; it shall not be too heavy. And yes, it could be a lid that open at the right side, as the right's door for spools. As you suggested, I drawn another version with a opening to the right. See the pictures please.

That cover looks awesome. When do you plan on publishing the files? :)

Thank you Jonatan!

My friend is supposed to print every parts and see how it is going, when they will have time.
I hope it will be soon. I will have to prepare the files and the installation diagram.
I just want to make it right before publishing the files.

I would like to integrate an air filter and holes access for an external spool.
