Suddenly black Screen

Postby Tinkerer » Thu Dec 07, 2017 5:16 pm

Hey!

Good news, I have encountered a new problem with my N2 today.

Printer idle in standby, nothing heating or so.
Suddenly the touchscreen went black.
Pressing the reset button did not help - it kept black.

After cycling power the screen worked again.

It did not happen again since then - let me check - ja, at the moment it seems to work.

So:
I did take a look into the serial log but had to recognize that is seems to be cleared after every restart - is that so?
Any way to make the log permanent and survive a restart?

Hi Tinkerer,

That is quite odd that the touchscreen just went out, has this happened before? As far as i'm aware, the serial log should not get wiped on restart. Please keep us posted and let us know if it happens again.

Hi Michael,

After switching on the printer, the log always starts at the time I switched it on.

Here is the latest log I have - got it some hours after the "black screen" of the printer
after it ran into thermal runaway once again...

Well, we will not loose sight of which one to tackle for you! We just need to keep the tickets updated with current information, some of the people in the ticket system do not check the forums so if you update here they do not know what has happened.

I am in conversation with the ticket-line and keep them updated as well.
I did also make them aware of the discussions over here.

Anybody else ever had this black-screen outage?

The serial log will be erased after every reboot. So you can only see the contents after this time your power on.

Okay, so we do not have anything to see in the log here.

What would be your advice to deal with this black screen thing?
It does not happen all the time, very rarely and randomly.

If very rarely, maybe just some software stuck. But please keep us updated, if it becomes to be very frequent.

Unfortunately (?) I could not reproduce it these day.

But I do not think this is a SW-problem.

If it would be such, it would happen every time you switch on the N2 and leave it alone.
I suspect that there is some kind of electrical connection error.
Actually a lot in my N2.
Cause sometimes it works well, sometimes not...

Have you ever tried flash the firmware back to 1.1.1 and check whether the problem fix or not?

Not at the moment. I know i can print after restart so it is not a big issue for me.
I can do this next week

I remember to have been strongly advised to use 1.1.6 because of possible thermal runaway issues with 1.1.1?

Did have the same discussion with support.
They also advised me to go back to 1.1.1 to get around another issue - which in the end seems to be related to a HW-problem.

If this black screen thing is an issue related to 1.1.6 I would expect somebody at Raise3D to be able to recreate this problem at least.
Even if that may requires to go through the list of changes made from 1.1.1 to 1.1.6 ...?!

We haven't recreated the same problem on our side yet. But since you said the problem was after installing the 1.1.6, just thought that would it be any related to the firmware.

I updated to 1.1.6 the other day and today my printer stopped mid-print w/ black screen. The nozzle is still in-contact with the print (it looks like it stopped as it was still extruding), the hotend is warm (not at print temperature), the cool-end fans are still on and the lights are still on but the tablet screen is black and unresponsive.

Upon restarting the printer, it prompts that there was a serial error during last build. I had been able to use the same gcode just fine before the 1.1.6 update without any errors in print.

After choosing Recover or Restart, can the print continues properly? Or with Cancel chosen, can the other print work properly?
It looks more like a sudden power shortage which cause the whole system power off. Due to the screen has a backup battery, but the motion board uses power directly from power supply unit, after power off, the motion board will lose the power supply first. And at the same time, the power supply for screen will be changed to battery. It will detect that it cannot read the message from motion board any more from serial port, which is called by serial error. The it will check whether the system is printing or not. If not it will power off itself. If it is printing, it will save the current printing status first then power itself off.

The print continued successfully after I cycled the power to the machine and clicked to resume. That’s such a great feature.
