Printing speed settings having confusing results

Postby Psychobob » Sat Aug 05, 2017 10:19 am

Hi,

Under Advanced Settings, if I increase "Default Printing Speed", "Inner Shell Speed" or "Outer Shell Speed", this seems to result in a slower print (both the estimated time in slicer and the actual print if I took it to the printer so it's not just an time estimation issue).

I am printing a very simple 20x20x20mm hollow cube as a baseline test (z axis is scaled 50%, no top or bottom layers).

Here's an example:

As a baseline:
    - Default printing speed: 45 mm/s
    - Inner Shell Speed: 45 mm/s
    - Outer Shell Speed: 25mm/s
    - Printing Estimate: 10m 47s

Now if I increase the Outer Shell Speed to 45 mm/s the estimated time goes up:
    - Default printing speed: 45 mm/s
    - Inner Shell Speed: 45 mm/s
    - Outer Shell Speed: 45mm/s
    - Printing Estimate: 14m 42s

If I increase the Default printing speed 60 mm/s the estimated time does not change:
    - Default printing speed: 60 mm/s
    - Inner Shell Speed: 45 mm/s
    - Outer Shell Speed: 45mm/s
    - Printing Estimate: 14m 42s

If I increase the inner shell speed to 60mm/s the time does come down a little
    - Default printing speed: 45 mm/s
    - Inner Shell Speed: 60 mm/s
    - Outer Shell Speed: 45mm/s
    - Printing Estimate: 9m 56s

If I increase both the inner and default speed to 60mm/s, the time decreases
    - Default printing speed: 60 mm/s
    - Inner Shell Speed: 45 mm/s
    - Outer Shell Speed: 45mm/s
    - Printing Estimate: 9m 56s

If I decrease the outer shell speed to 10 mm/s, the time is the fastest
    - Default printing speed: 45 mm/s
    - Inner Shell Speed: 45 mm/s
    - Outer Shell Speed: 10mm/s
    - Printing Estimate: 8m 48s

I am very confused by this behaviour. If I'm increasing the print speed for defaul, outer or inner, shouldn't the time consistently be going down?

I am using IdeaMaker v2.6.0.925. I've attached an export of my settings from ideaMaker also.

Thanks

If you model is not such big, the biggest time affecting factor should be Minimal Layer Print Time and Minimal Layer Printing Speed in Cooling tab.

Which means if you increase the printing speed which will reduce the printing time of each layer. For the layers which have not much thing to print, the print time of that layer may be reduced to under the Minimal Layer Print Time. It will drop that layer's printing speed then.
If your printing speed is lower enough, which cause the printing time of each layer is longer than Minimal Layer Print Time, it will keep the speed as you set.

But due to the Minimal Layer Printing Speed, the speed will not be reduced to be under that value, should be 10mm/s by default.
