Extruder gear clicking on 1st layer only

Postby NewbPilot » Mon Apr 10, 2017 11:18 am

Short video shows the extruder gear quickly reversing and clicking in a very methodical way. This is not during retraction, as i filmed while making straight lines and long infill lines and the same issue happened. After the first layer, it stops and even on retraction doesnt make this sound. It happens on all filament,, eSun petg, MakerGeeks Raptor PLA, Raise3D Premium Red. as you can see the print ends up just fine (below) but the clicking will grind some filament so much it gets stuck in the gear. Any reason for this? Slicer settings below as well, but never changed from N1 except for the 1st layer being more than the layer height because of my bed level issues.

Image of the finished print; does the translucent contour is a skirt? If so, probably your nozzle is too close to the bed making it difficult to extrude material (most noticeable on the first layer because is the layer with the most flowrate).

It's doing it because either spool drag or backpressure in the nozzle is greater force than the motor can provide and so as the magnetic field rotates, the rotor in the motor cannot move following the rotating field and jumps back to the previous alignment. It's called skipping steps and is what stepper motors do when you overload them. As a 3D printer owner, in the long term of things, you really should know this like the back of your hand.

Telltale hint "After the first layer, it stops and even on retraction doesnt make this sound."
So what did I just say about backpressure? What happens if the nozzle is too close on first layer??

Properly level the bed and set the first layer gap.

I understand what you're saying. Thank you.

The bed level is part of my issue. It's not level at all, and I need to have time to call customer support to walk through the N2 bed leveling process. And as I mentioned in another post, while it works perfectly on my N1, feeler gauge at 0.2mm and first layer at 0.16 is causing issues. Feeler gauge at 0.2mm and first layer at 0.25 is causing what you saw here. I'm printing small things since I dont have the bed level for more than 40mm in any direction. I'll keep working at it,
